Vasyl Shevchyk is a name that has become synonymous with modern ophthalmology in Ukraine. As the founder of a network of medical centers, a surgeon with more than two decades of clinical experience, and the initiator of large-scale charitable programs for military personnel and civilians affected by war, he has consistently combined medical excellence with strong social responsibility.

His journey in medicine began with a childhood desire to follow in the footsteps of the doctors in his family. Over the years, that early ambition grew into a distinguished professional path marked by scientific publications, patents, international certifications, and membership in globally recognized professional organizations. He became the first ophthalmologist in the Chernihiv region to earn the degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences in his specialty, as well as the region’s first member of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. Later, he also joined the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Today, he remains the only specialist in the region recognized by both associations.

Dr. Shevchyk continues to set standards as a clinician, educator, and researcher. He is among the few ophthalmic surgeons in Ukraine who perform implantation of multifocal and toric intraocular lenses and actively advance surgical treatment of glaucoma. His expertise in cataract surgery and retinal pathology is acknowledged by companies such as Alcon, Bayer, Bausch & Lomb, and WorldMedicine, where he is invited as a leading lecturer and consultant. His scientific work on cataract surgery became the only Ukrainian publication in the past decade featured in the journal “Ophthalmic Surgery.”

His professional achievements are reflected in the development of a network of state-of-the-art clinics in Kyiv, Chernihiv, Nizhyn, Pryluky, and Novhorod-Siverskyi. These centers are equipped with advanced American, German, and Japanese technologies, enabling treatment of conditions that previously required care abroad.

A defining quality of Dr. Shevchyk’s work is his commitment to continuous learning. Each year, he and his team participate in international training programs across Europe, speak at global ophthalmology congresses, and bring cutting-edge treatment approaches back to Ukraine.

Beyond his clinical role, he is a devoted family man. His wife, renowned plastic surgeon Olena Chugay, works alongside him and leads the aesthetic medicine division of the clinic. Together, they are raising their son.

Today, as Ukraine faces profound challenges, Dr. Shevchyk has expanded his mission to include large humanitarian initiatives. His charitable programs focus on restoring vision for military service members and supporting those affected by war. Through his work, he strives not only to return people to health, but also to restore their quality of life, confidence, and dignity.
